Beaches, Parks, Hiking and Bird Watching

Pomo Bluffs at Todd's Point and Hare Creek Beach

Among the Emerald Dolphin Inn's most beautiful assets is Pomo Bluffs park just a short walk away. A gorgeous 25-acre blufftop park with unobstructed views of the Pacific Ocean, Noyo Bridge, and the mouth of the Noyo River and harbor entrance. People come here to walk or to ride their bikes on a level trail that winds around Todd's Point with benches and interpretive panels along the way.  Also within walking distance of Emerald Dolphin is the secluded Hare  Creek Beach. This beautiful beach is a popular spot for surfing, skin boarding, boogie boarding, or just hanging out on the beach relaxing or watching the beautiful sunset.

Mackerricher State Park

A park that has it all. Come, visit the gorgeous stretch of sandy beach, feed the ducks or fish in the lake, bird watch, take a walk on the boardwalk to explore the tide pools or watch sea lions. Don't forget to look for whale spouts!

If you have time to venture through the camp ground area, you will also find a replica of a life size whale skeleton. If you only have time for one park on this trip... this is the one not to miss. Located on Highway One, just 3 miles North of Fort Bragg and just 10 short minutes from the Emerald Dolphin Inn.

And the best part is... park entrance is always free to the public

Glass Beach

One of the most unique beaches in the world. The sand is covered in smooth beach glass glistening in the sun. Located on West Elm street in Fort Bragg, just minutes from Emerald Dolphin Inn.  This is also where you can begin the new beach front walking trail along the bluffs of Fort Bragg.

Russian Gulch State Park

This park is known for the heavily forested Creek Canyon, a headland that features the Devil’s Punch Bowl (a large, collapsed sea cave with churning water), and a beach that offers swimming, tide pool exploring, skin diving and rock fishing. Inland,(about 5 mile round trip hike) there is a 36-foot high waterfall. Hikers will enjoy miles of hiking trails. The park also has a paved three-mile bicycle trail. Located approx. 8 miles South of Emerald Dolphin Inn on Highway 1.

JugHandle State Park

The watershed of Jug Handle Creek holds a rare natural phenomenon— an “ecological staircase”—that attracts scientists and nature lovers from all over the world. The staircase is composed of 5 terraces, each about 100,000 years older and about 100 feet higher than the one below it. The hike: Head west on the signed trail out onto the grassy blufftops. The trail loops toward the edge of the bluffs, offers a view of Jug Handle Cove, then returns east to dip under the highway bridge. Located on Hwy One just minutes from Emerald Dolphin Inn. on Highway One.

The Redwoods

Montgomery Woods

Mendocino County's Coastal forests are home to some of largest, tallest, and oldest redwoods in the world. Some of these trees touch the sky at nearly 300 feet tall. Montgomery Woods, located 1 hour East of Fort Bragg on the Comptche Ukiah Rd between Mendocino and Ukiah, is a small alluvial flat that's hidden away in a remote, steep-sided valley, where you'll find one of the most scenic redwood groves in existence. At one time, Montgomery Flat contained the tallest measured tree in the world at 367'. While its location is secret, and taller trees have since been found in other parks, that distinction still gives the grove a certain cachet.

Jackson State Forest

Covering over 55,000 acres, Jackson State is another beautiful, redwood and animal rich forest located 1/2 hour E. of Fort Bragg on Hwy 20 .

Avenue Of The Giants

This world-famous scenic drive is a 31-mile portion of old Hwy 101, next to 101 with its 51,222 acres of redwood groves.

Drive Through Tree

There are three "Drive-Through" Trees located on the North Coast. All are privately owned and a fee is charged to drive through. The closest one to Humboldt Redwoods State Park is the Shrine Drive-Thru Tree in Myers Flat, four miles south of the park visitor's center. Another is in Leggett, only 50 minutes from Fort Bragg and the junction of Hwy One and Hwy 101. Open from 8am to dusk, it offers a gift shop, picnic area, & nature walks. #67402 (Hwy 271) Drive Thru Tree Road, Leggett
